Canberra is the little known, and much loved capital of Australia. If you asked most people, they'd say the capital of Australia had to be Sydney, or possibly even Melbourne. So naturally it would be a complete surprise to find that Sydney is actually not the capital, and a 'new town' in the country between Sydney and Melbourne is.
Created just after the turn of the twentieth century, the new capital of Canberra was the solution to a long contested battle between Sydney, and Melbourne for ultimate supremacy. Melbourne had been the gold-rush Victorian city which had held the reins of financial and cultural power over the country, until the formidable upstart, Sydney, began to grow and usurp the almighty power of Melbourne. It was in fact a catastrophic blow to Melbourne, which had been recognised as the most powerful and wealthy city in the world after London in the reign of Victoria.
An international competition was instigated to design the new capital, which was to lie equidistant between the two great cities. With great panache and style the winner was named as the husband and wife architect duo from Chicago, Walter and Marion Griffin. They were very enamoured of the new 'garden style' of city, and had used this template for urban tranquillity to great effect. The artificial lake at the centre of their plans for Canberra is named after them.
